Dare to Compare: John Deere 3E vs. Kubota L
If you’re looking for an affordable and simple 30-40 horsepower tractor, two of the most popular choices out there are the Kubota L series and the economical John Deere 3E series. We know how tough these decisions can be, especially if you don’t have much experience with this type of tractor. That’s why our team here at Belkorp Ag decided to do a little research to make your decision easier. We found that when it comes to performance, ease of use, affordability and a number of other factors, only one family of tractors comes out on top — and that’s John Deere 3E.
John Deere is committed to quality, even in their most affordable machines. Before you even start the engine, the John Deere 3E series has an advantage over the Kubota L. 3E models have a tough composite hood that can’t rust and won’t dent. Even if your tractor is impacted by some falling rocks or limbs, you won’t have to worry about any unsightly blemishes. We can’t say the same thing about the Kubota L sheet metal hood, though. You will have to take extra care to prevent rust, and denting is virtually inevitable.
Once you start using the equipment, you’ll appreciate the oil cooled clutch in the John Deere 3E. To engage it, all you have to do is lift the PTO button. The engagement is always smooth, even under heavy loads. Plus, you can always engage while you’re on the move — no need to come to a stop. With the Kubota L, you won’t get the same benefit. It has a dry PTO clutch, and you have to be careful not to slip the clutch too fast or you might break a shear pin. The real kicker is that Kubota’s dry clutch must be adjusted every 100 hours, which is not necessary for the John Deere. That means more time to get work done!
Another nice feature of the 3E John Deere is the twin touch transmission. The two pedals make it easy to quickly change directions, because there’s no shifting or clutching involved. Because the transmission is oil cooled, you can also count on a much longer transmission life. The pedal on the Kubota L might not seem so bad at first, but it requires you to repeatedly bend your foot back and forth in an unnatural position. Eventually, that’s likely to take a toll on you.
Not only is the 3E Deere easier to maneuver and operate, but it actually has a significantly tighter turning radius. The John Deere has a turning radius of 75 inches, while the Kubota has a turning radius of a whopping 98 inches. That means you need nearly two more feet of space to clear buildings and gates. If you add a loader, the difference becomes even more obvious. That’s because the Kubota L’s loader and bucket stick out several inches farther than that of the John Deere 3E.
Speaking of loaders, that’s another perk of going with the John Deere 3E. The standard quick detach bucket takes just seconds to take off and lighten the load. John Deere knows how important your time is, so they’re not keen on wasting it. If you want the same kind of convenience from the Kubota L, you’ll have to shell out some extra cash.
In fact, the John Deere 3E series offers a number of features that either aren’t available or aren’t standard on the Kubota L. A convenient cruise control option, protected steering components, high-quality materials and a whole lot more set the Deere apart from the pack herd.
