The sun is out, the birds are chirping, and it’s time to get those residential tractors geared up for spring! Whether you just have a small tractor to help you in the garden or a few different machines to keep your property in tip-top shape, it’s important to take the right steps in preparing your equipment for the season. Check out this list of some basic things you should do before putting your residential tractor to work this spring.

Safety First

When operating heavy machinery like residential tractors, safety should always be your number one priority. Before you begin using your equipment this season, inspect it and make sure all the safety shields and measures are there and working correctly. Don’t forget to also test things like turn signals, flashers, and latches.

Fluids & Filters

If your tractor has been sitting in storage for the winter, there’s a good chance there’s been some condensation buildup that has the potential to contaminate your oil and other fluids. The best way to make sure everything’s running smoothly is to schedule service for your tractor now before you get too deep into the season. If it’s not time for service yet and you feel confident doing these checks yourself, be sure to inspect all filters and tanks for evidence of condensation.

Engine Check

In order for your tractor to get the job done correctly and efficiently, you need to make sure the engine is running as well as it can be. Check the ignition system and the battery on your tractor, and replace any parts that aren’t up to par. If you notice any leaks of fluid, intake or exhaust, they need to be addressed right away to avoid a fire hazard. Take a look at your air filters too, and change them out to help your tractor breathe easy again.

Tire Time

Look over your tires to make sure they’re firm and free of tears or punctures. Tire pressure and inflation is critical for getting the most out of your machine’s horsepower and for keeping your equipment sturdy and efficient.
